Hailing from Greensboro, North Carolina, super producer Ski Beatz remains in his own lane. Formally known as the “MC Will- Ski”, Ski Beatz was once a member of the group Original Flavor, who in the 90′s had a hit single called, “Can I Get Open“, which featured now megastar, Jay-Z. Being in this group spawned a new business relationship with his once manager, now friend, Dame Dash. During production of Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt album in 1996, Dame called upon Ski to create some tracks, not only who this mark his first production placement on an album, the tracks Ski produced were also hit singles, “Dead Presidents” and “Feelin It”. In conjunction with the Roc-A-Fella label , Ski launched his on production company Roc-A-Block. Under his company Ski, produced Fat Joe’s hit single, “Just Blaze” , and Camp Lo’s debut album Uptown Saturday Night. After Dame Dash severed ties with Jay-z, Roc-A-Block folded. Since then Ski has reunited with Dame Dash on Dash’s new label DD172 Label. Working with such acts such as fellow A3C performer Murs, Jay Electronica, and Mos Def. Through many rigorous studios sessions and progress, Ski will definitely remain a hip hop production icon for years to come.

DJ Trackstar has recently released “Out Of The Darkness”, a 50 track tribute to the legendary Atlanta production team Organized Noize that spans nearly their whole career up to this point. Here’s what the cats at the Smoking Section had to say:

“After nearly twenty years in the game, Organized Noize doesn’t get their due respect. Their prolific works still manage to be overlooked despite the three-man production team playing an instrumental role in the creation of widely-accepted classic albums, number one hits and Grammy-winning records, as well as breaking some of the most important artists in Hip-Hop.

Rico Wade, Ray Murray and Sleepy Brown helped pioneer the Southern Hip-Hop movement, kicking down doors at major record labels and raising the ceiling for all artists from below the Mason-Dixon at a time when the industry and nation were still resistant to Southern sounds. They brought us one of the greatest collectives in the history of Hip-Hop, the Dungeon Family, while introducing Outkast and Goodie Mob to the world. They produced the entirety of Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and Soul Food, not to mention platinum hits for TLC and En Vogue, and even completed songs with Curtis Mayfield. One would think that would be enough to land them a permanent spot in the “Greatest Hip-Hop Producer of All Time” conversation, but all too often Ray, Rico and Sleepy seem to be an afterthought.

It was with this line of thinking in mind that this mix was created. The trio doesn’t rap (though Sleepy Brown has several albums under his belt), and aren’t the most vocal in the media. They let their music do the talking, andOut Of The Darkness operates along the same lines. In 80 minutes, 50 tracks lay out a compelling case for Organized Noize’s inclusion when Hip-Hop fans are speaking of the royal family of production: Dre, RZA, Premier, Pete Rock and the other usual suspects. No less an authority than Big Rube (for the uninitiated, Rube is the voice of the spoken word pieces on classic records from Aquemini to Sir Lucious Leftfoot, as well as the intro to the Future’s Pluto) narrates the disc, helping guide listeners through two decades of productions ranging from the layers of soulful live instrumentation in “Waterfalls” and the early Outkast material to the hard-hitting drums of “They Don’t Dance No Mo” and “Watch For The Hook.”

The project is co-presented by Devil’s Pie, TSS, 2DopeBoyz and Maurice Garland.com, and the amazing cover artwork was illustrated and designed by illadelphsouL (prints can be purchased here). It’s impossible to capture the breadth of Organized Noize’s discography in 50 tracks, but this mix attempts to provide a starting place for listeners to develop their understanding of one of the most underrated production teams in Hip-Hop history.”

The spring lookbook from our friends at Akomplice is looking pretty nice.

http://www.akomplice-clothing.com/spring2012/fullcollection.html

The Spring 2012 line from Akomplice is introduced auspiciously with a video lookbook that spans the collection. Traversing both urban and rural Japanese milieus in Tokyo, the viewer is given a first hand account of the versatility of the collection that it befits each environment. Akomplice pays strict attention to detail, and makes use of a diverse palette of materials. From canvas on the camouflage-clad cardholder, to chambray button-up jackets, the array of material selections is a mainstay. The focus on a curated collection of accessories is apparent through the combination of standard and waxed canvas on the intricately clasped rucksack. Other choice accessories include the vintage-inspired pocket watch complete with branded VSOP engraving, and the canvas Pelican belt that sports a galvanized brass fastening system. While accessories may be a focal point, garments garner attention in the form of the two-tone color blocked pullover and a range of cut and sew t-shirts. T-shirt graphics stem from a cascade of cigarettes, to menacing junglecat cats, and all play in to the nice clean Spring line. All spring products will be Available on May 5th at the Akomplice Webstore (http://www.akomplice-clothing.com/store.html) as well as Akomplice retailers worldwide.

Video Filmed & Edited By Yudai Maruyama

Today A3C Alumni Big K.R.I.T. debuted the artwork for his upcoming commercial release “Live From The Underground” on his website. Buy the album June 5th.

He explained the concept behind the cover:

“This is the artwork 4 my debut album “Live From The Underground”. It’s a representation of how I feel about underground vs mainstream music. At times I feel like mainstream music operates on a totally different planet. This illustrates how I’ve crash landed into the mainstream to bring the sounds from the underground back 2 the forefront. I want to thank everyone for all their support of my journey so far. Especially Team Big K.R.I.T. and my K4L supporters. I put twitter and facebook backgrounds in here for y’all to put on your pages. Let’s make history on June 5th…”

For more information, go to his website or follow him on twitter and as always give us a follow as well for the latest info on the the festival!
